Vietnam North to South EV Road Trip Guide: Hanoi to HCMC — 10-Day Itinerary for 2026
Last updated: June 5, 2026
Driving the length of Vietnam — 1,700 km from Hanoi's thousand-year-old streets to Ho Chi Minh City's neon pulse — is one of Southeast Asia's great road trips. And in 2026, it's finally practical to do it in an electric car.
Vietnam's EV infrastructure has grown explosively. V-Green (VinFast's charging arm) now operates over 4,000 charging ports nationwide, with DC fast chargers spaced every 80–120 km along the QL1A highway corridor. Networks like EVOne, EBOOST, and the Porsche-backed CHARGE+ have filled premium gaps with ultra-fast 180 kW units. Hotel destination charging is becoming standard at resorts from Hoi An to Nha Trang. Range anxiety on Vietnam's main north–south artery is no longer a valid concern — but planning still matters.
This guide covers the entire route in detail: the charging stops, the distances, the gaps to watch for, the best EVs for the job, and a full 10-day itinerary that balances driving with sightseeing.

Major Stops at a Glance
Hanoi → Ninh Binh (95 km) → Vinh (195 km) → Dong Hoi (190 km) → Hue (170 km) → Da Nang (100 km) → Hoi An (30 km) → Quy Nhon (310 km) → Nha Trang (220 km) → Phan Thiet (260 km) → HCMC (200 km)
Charging Networks Along the Route
V-Green / VinFast — The Backbone
V-Green is the default network for EV travel in Vietnam. Stations are located at petrol stations, rest stops, and VinFast dealerships along QL1A.
- DC Fast (60 kW) — The workhorse. Found every 80–120 km. Charges a VinFast VF 8 (420 km WLTP) from 10%–80% in about 35 minutes.
- DC Ultra-Fast (180 kW) — Newer stations at Vinh, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, and Long Thanh. Cuts charge time to 15–20 minutes.
- Connector: VinFast proprietary plug with CCS2 adapter available. Most stations also have a dedicated CCS2 cable now.
EVOne — Premium Alternative
EVOne operates CCS2 stations at shopping malls and hotels in major cities. Their 120 kW units are faster than most V-Green stations.
- Coverage: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang, HCMC
- Connector: CCS2 only
- Payment: App (credit card accepted)
CHARGE+ (Porsche Partnership)
In 2025, CHARGE+ partnered with Porsche to install 17 high-powered DC stations spanning the 1,700 km route. These are premium stations with 180 kW units, usually at coffee shops and hotels.
- Coverage: Key gaps including Vinh ↔ Hue and Phan Thiet
- Connector: CCS2, Type 2
- Payment: App, RFID card
EBOOST
A growing network concentrated in Hanoi and HCMC with some QL1A coverage. Good backup option.
The Charging Gap: Vinh to Hue (270 km)
This is the most critical charging gap on the entire north–south route. The 270 km stretch from Vinh to Hue has sparse charging until Dong Hoi (about 190 km south of Vinh), where a V-Green DC station exists. Most notably, the 140 km stretch between Vinh and Ha Tinh lacks DC fast charging entirely.
How to Handle It
- Top up to 100% in Vinh — Use the V-Green DC station at the Petrolimex station on QL1A south of Vinh city. Charge to 100% (takes ~45–50 mins at 60 kW).
- Mid-way top-up at Dong Hoi — At 190 km south of Vinh, the V-Green station at Dong Hoi (60 kW) is your safety stop. Even if you have range to skip it, use it as a buffer — the weather in central Vietnam can be unpredictable and air conditioning consumption spikes in heat.
- Alternative: CHARGE+ at Ha Tinh — A new CHARGE+ station at Ha Tinh (90 km south of Vinh) offers 180 kW ultra-fast charging. A 10-minute stop here and you're golden.
- Hue arrival — From Dong Hoi to Hue is 170 km. Arrive with 15–20% and top up at the V-Green or EVOne station in Hue city.
Battery alert: If you're driving a shorter-range EV (under 350 km WLTP), do NOT skip Dong Hoi. The Hai Van Pass climb south of Hue will consume 30% more energy than flat highway driving.

Safety Tips for EV Driving in Vietnam
Road Conditions
- QL1A is a mixed bag — The main north–south highway ranges from excellent 4-lane expressway (Hanoi–Ninh Binh, Da Nang–Quang Ngai, HCMC–Long Thanh) to narrow 2-lane road shared with trucks, motorbikes, pedestrians, and livestock. Expect the unexpected.
- Watch for motorbikes — Vietnam has 8 million+ motorbikes that use QL1A. They overtake on both sides, merge from side roads without stopping, and drive at night without lights. Drive defensively.
- Hai Van Pass — The 20 km mountain pass between Hue and Da Nang is spectacular but demanding. Tight hairpins, fog, trucks. Use regenerative braking on descents. The tunnel bypass (toll VND 50,000) is faster but less scenic.
- Flooding risk (Oct–Nov) — Central Vietnam (especially Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue) gets torrential monsoon rain. Roads can flood within hours. Check weather.gov.vn daily and have a 24-hour buffer in your itinerary.
Charging Safety
- Never trust "available" on the app — V-Green app status can lag by 30+ minutes. Call the station if you're low on battery. Many stations are at petrol stations where staff can help.
- Keep a backup cable — Hotel chargers rarely provide cables. Bring your own Type 2 cable for AC charging. A portable 220V charger gives you 15 km/hour from any Vietnamese power outlet — enough for emergency top-ups.
- VinFast E-Pin app — Download and pre-load at least VND 1,000,000 into your E-Pin wallet. International credit cards work but can be slow. E-Pin balance is the most reliable payment method.
- Valet charging at hotels — Many luxury hotels offer valet charging. Always tip the valet VND 50,000–100,000 ($2–4) if they handle your charging cable.
General Driving Tips
- Toll roads — The expressway sections (Hanoi–Ninh Binh, Da Nang–Quang Ngai, HCMC–Long Thanh–Dau Giay) use e-tag (VETC). Most rental cars come with one. Cash lanes also exist.
- Navigation — Google Maps works well but isn't always accurate on charger locations. Use VinFast E-Pin for V-Green stations and PlugShare for community-verified status.
- Insurance — Ensure your rental includes comprehensive insurance. Accidents involving motorbikes are common.
- Night driving — Avoid it. Street lighting is poor on many QL1A sections. Plan your driving between 7 AM and 5 PM.
Seasonal Advice
Best Time: December–April (Dry Season)
- North (Hanoi): Cool and dry (15–22°C). Perfect for city exploration.
- Central (Hue–Da Nang): Dry and sunny. Hai Van Pass visibility is excellent.
- South (HCMC): Dry and hot (28–35°C). No rain delays.
- Charging bonus: Cooler temperatures mean better battery efficiency and shorter charging times.
Avoid: October–November (Central Monsoon)
Central Vietnam (Quang Binh → Da Nang) gets the worst of the monsoon. Flooding on QL1A between Dong Hoi and Hue is common. The Hai Van Pass can be shrouded in fog with zero visibility. If you must travel during this period, stick to the Hai Van Tunnel (toll) and build in 1–2 buffer days for weather delays.
Shoulder: May–June and September
- May–June: Getting hot (35°C+). Air conditioning will reduce range by 15–20%. Plan extra charging stops.
- September: Early monsoon in the north, late dry in the south. Manageable but check daily forecasts.
Summer: July–August
Hottest and busiest time. National holidays (July school break) mean crowded attractions. Battery cooling systems work harder. Try to charge during cooler morning hours.
